What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in Brazil in the early 20th century and is based on the principles of leverage and proper technique to enable a smaller, weaker person to defend themselves against a larger, stronger opponent. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is known for its effective use of chokes and joint locks to subdue an opponent. It is also a popular sport, with competitions held around the world.

What can I expect in my first class?

During your first class you will be welcomed and included in the class just like you've been a member for years. You will receive one on one instruction from our knowledgeable instructors and you will work in with one or more of our students to help nurture and develop the basic foundations of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Am I too old to start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

The short answer is NO! It is never too late to start training and learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There are hundreds of stories and articles around the internet where older people are receiving their black belts!

Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu beneficial for women?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is, in our opinion, the most effective form of self-defense for women to learn. Since most attacks end up on the ground, strategic grips and proper application of leverage and body weight distribution will allow women to escape from attackers standing or on the ground.

Are your mats kept clean?

We take great care and pride in the cleanliness of our facility. Our mats are cleaned multiple times a day; to sanitize and disinfect them for our student's health and safety.

How many classes can I attend with my membership?

All of our monthly memberships include UNLIMITED class attendance. To accommodate your busy schedule, we offer several different class times throughout the day. Please see our current schedule to see if we have times that fit your schedule!

What do I need to bring and wear to my first class?

For your first class(es) during your trial period for men, women, and kids gym/board shorts, sweat pants, and a t-shirt is acceptable. Any kind of leggings/athletic wear is acceptable as well.

Will I, or can I get hurt?

We take student safety very serious at Memento Combat Sports. While injury can occur in any athletic training, we take pride in creating and maintaining an environment with a VERY low occurrence of injury.

Is my child too young to start Martial Arts at Memento Combat Sports?

We accept kids as young as 4 years old to begin their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey. We group our Little Champs into groups with like sized and like skilled kids. This fosters an environment of easier learning and friendship for our Little Champs.

I'm not in good shape; should I get in shape before starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Memento Combat Sports?

There is no need to get "in shape" prior to becoming a member. Our classes are an excellent way to get into shape. Not only will you learn the essential skills of self-defense, but you will also focus on muscle strengthening, endurance, cardio, and flexibility.

Do you have changing rooms?

Yes! We have private changing rooms with doors that lock. The changing rooms have mirrors and benches as well, so if you want to train at 6 am, then head to work that is an option!

How fast will I earn new belt ranks?

Earning rank in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is different from many other martial arts and "karate" classes. Earning a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can take up to 10 years to earn. Generally, an adult student can expect to hold their current belt rank for 16-24 months after earning that belt.
