Joseph "Joe" Watson

Head Instructor/Owner

Joseph “Joe” Watson is a black belt under multiple-time world champion Samuel Braga, and he is a world-class competitive Jiu-Jitsu player.

Joe has been an athlete since he was young, but he has been practicing, teaching, and competing in Jiu-Jitsu for over a decade. Following a successful football career at Maryville High School, he found his greatest passion in Jiu-Jitsu. He very quickly discovered that this gentle art was something he wanted to dedicate his life to and transitioned to a full-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.

Joe is an esteemed coach and has multiple years of experience teaching kids and adults alike at Gracie Barra Knoxville, a world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Knoxville, TN, prior to opening Maryville Jiu-Jitsu. Having recently graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in Business Administration, Joe is excited to share his knowledge of this amazing art with students through his passionate and infectious teaching style.

Daniel McCarthy

Instructor/Owner

Daniel McCarthy is a 3rd-Degree Black Belt under Bernardo Faria. Daniel brings over 25 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to our school and is a cornerstone of teaching here at Memento Combat Sports. Daniel is also a black belt in Shotokan and holds a brown belt in Uechi-Ryu. Dan has been an active competitor, has won multiple IBJJF Gold Medals as a black belt, and won Bronze as a purple belt in the Pan-Am competition.

Tristan Pack

Adult Instructor

Tristan brings a wealth of Martial Arts to Memento Combat Sports. He has 8 years of experience teaching youth martial arts and 4 years teaching martial arts to adults as well.

Tristan is an active BJJ competitor and holds a Purple Belt under Joseph Watson. To add to Tristan’s lengthy list of martial arts he is proficient in, he is currently a 2nd-degree black belt in Krav Maga. Tristan has experience in Sport Karate, Taekwondo, and Kick Boxing.

Tristan is a real asset to our martial arts family, and he will for sure be an asset in learning during your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Josh Huffstettler
Kids Instructor

Josh is a Purple Belt under Joseph Watson. He has over 5 years of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience as well as Judo and competitive Taekwondo.

Josh also has experience teaching wrestling to kids. Josh is a phenomenal teacher overall and is the perfect fit to teach and guide your children on their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Journey!!

Samuel Braga

Professor/Mentor

Samuel Braga is a multiple time world champion black belt and is Joseph Watson’s professor and mentor. Samuel is currently a 4th Degree Black Belt under Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães. Samuel owns Gracie Barra in Knoxville, TN. Samuel’s love and dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are unmatched, and it is always a pleasure to learn from Samuel. We invite Samuel in often, so when we announce his visit, be sure to attend and learn from him!!

Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

We offer kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes for ages 4-13. For our Little Champions (4-6) we have a proven system that focuses on fundamental skills, discipline, and self-defense. For kids ages 7-13 we build off the fundamental lessons learned and add intermediate-level skills. Kids in this group are welcome to become part of our competition team if they choose.

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Memento Combat Sports Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is perfect for young and old. We offer an inviting, family atmosphere that will help you reach your goals faster than you could imagine. Whether you’re a brand new student or someone who has relocated to the area, we welcome all and look forward to having you become part of the family.

Women's Only Jiu Jitsu

Ladies, we understand that it can be intimidating to grapple. The women learn the same world-champion lineage jiu-jitsu that is taught in the regular adult class, except that it is for women only who are striving to reach the same goal. We take pride in offering this program to the women martial artists in the greater Knoxville, TN area.
